Lionesses Lead Gomba's Quest for Sixth Masaza Cup Title as Busiro Await Opening Test
Gomba will begin their 2026 Masaza Cup campaign against Busiro on Sunday buoyed by a fully fit squad, renewed ambition and the leadership of two women officials tasked with ending the county's trophy drought and delivering a sixth championship title.

Gomba are brimming with confidence ahead of their opening 2026 Masaza Cup fixture against Busiro after completing their final training session at Kabulasoke ahead of Sunday's clash at Trinity College Nabingo.

The former champions head into the tournament with all 32 players in camp declared fit and available for selection, providing the technical team with a full squad as they launch their bid for a sixth Masaza Cup title.

Competing under the theme “Mission Sixth Trophy”, Gomba are hoping to return to the summit of Buganda's premier football competition after failing to lift the trophy since their 2020/21 triumph.

A notable feature of this year's campaign is the leadership of two women officials entrusted with guiding the team back to glory. Gomba County Chief Fred Williams Mugabi Kitunzi appointed Jane Namatovu as chairperson and Resty Mbatide Namugema as team manager, placing them at the forefront of the county's title challenge.

The pair expressed confidence in the team's preparations and urged supporters to remain optimistic about the campaign ahead.

“We want to assure all Gomba supporters that this time they should expect joy. We are fully prepared and determined to start by overcoming Busiro,” Jane and Resty said.

They added that the team is ready to compete strongly throughout the tournament and warned rivals against underestimating Gomba this season.

“All our players are in good condition according to the technical team. We are targeting victory against Busiro and intend to compete strongly throughout the group stage. Once women take on a task, we are committed to seeing it through,” they said.

Assistant coach David Sozi Nono said the team has benefited from an extensive training programme and believes the players are ready for the demands of the competition.

“We have spent considerable time training the players and believe they are ready for the challenge ahead. We have prepared them mentally and physically to approach every match professionally. We call upon all Gomba supporters to rally behind the team as we pursue our mission of winning a sixth title,” Sozi said.

Team captain Herbert Onenarach also expressed confidence that the squad has what it takes to compete for honours this season.

“We have received all the necessary preparations to win the opening match against Busiro and compete for the trophy. We want Gomba fans to enjoy every moment from the first game to the last,” he said.

Gomba will now turn their focus to Sunday's encounter against Busiro, a fixture that could provide an early indication of whether the county's quest to reclaim Masaza Cup glory is on course.

With a fully fit squad, experienced technical team and the leadership of Jane Namatovu and Resty Mbatide Namugema, Gomba believe they possess the organisation, determination and quality needed to bring the coveted trophy back home.
